Engraver (1820-1824). One of the rarest early 19th C. broadside printings of the Declaration. 23 1/2″ high x 18″ wide. Printed on wove paper. The Declaration of Independence, the foundation document of the United States, has been printed numerous times since its original publication in 1776. Owen Taylor created a calligraphic version of the Declaration and published it in 1818. Three other printings of the Declaration were issued in 1818 and 1819. All had elaborate ornamental borders. In 1820, the present printing by Hartford engraver Eleazer Huntington was produced; Huntington removed much of the ornamental features included on previous printings. Shows moderate foxing throughout and was once folded in fourths, leaving two crease lines.
