(British, 19th C. ) Oil on canvas. Depicting the bark HOPE shown in a port view under shortened sail in rough waters. The ship to the right appears to be the bow-quarter view of the same vessel. The sea is dark and turbulent and the sky in the background is a vivid pink and ominous dark grey sky to the right. Sight size: 16 3/4″ high x 23 3/4″ wide. In a carved wooden frame measuring: 23 1/4″ high x 30 1/2″ wide. The bark was the ship that brought Albert Bierstadt and his family to New Bedford in 1832. Provenance: Property deaccessioned from the Old Dartmouth Historical Society, New Bedford, Massachusetts. Proceeds to benefit the collection. Lined with minor inpainting.
