Circa 1200-1500 AD. Jasper-like stone. Anthropomorphic effigies portrayed in a hallucinogenic state. This couple display a common portrayal of a supernatural dream state. This is portrayed as sitting with hands on knees, mouth gaping, and staring forward and can be seen in pendants to large statuary. The male is the larger of the two. His phallus has a foreskin indicating he is not a god but a cacique or a person of elite standing. The phallus also is the mouth of a ghost figure on the chest. The female has breasts, swollen vagina and extended belly button, the latter two symbols of fertility. Both have upper arm bands. It is extremely rare to find a matched pair of effigies. The male is 6″ high x 3 3/4″ wide x 2 3/4″ deep. Female measures 5″ high x 4 1/2″ wide x 3 1/2″ deep. From the estate of Dr. Robert Woodruff, former president of Entomology at the University of Florida who studied insects in the Dominican Republic for 40 years, while there collecting Taino art, amber and Larimer.
