Seated in a chair with a mahogany frame and red upholstery wearing a black coat, gray waistcoat, white stock and his right arm is tucked into his coat with a red drape in the background. Sight size: 35″ high x 27″ wide. Unframed. (B) Maria Curtis Hoag. Oil on canvas. Oval shape. Unsigned. Half-length portrait. Wearing a dark brown ruffled dress with puff sleeves and a sheer white collar. Red drape in the background. Sight size: 35″ high x 26 1/2″ wide. Housed in a period carved and gilded frame, possibly original, measuring: 42″ high x 33 1/2″ wide. Provenance: Property deaccessioned from the Old Dartmouth Historical Society, New Bedford, Massachusetts. Proceeds to benefit the collection. (A) Minor paint flaking at bottom and light craquelure. (B) Frame shows losses to gesso.
