Ca. 1870s. Herbert W. Chapman (patent holder) steel, breech loading shoulder gun and bomb lance. The bomb lance features original Cunningham and Cogan label made by Patrick Cunningham and Bernard Cogan of New Bedford, Massachusetts. This is the first patented American whaling shoulder gun that is signed by the patent holder. The gun has several markings including the patent holder, and serial #71. 34 1/2″ long(gun); 1″ bore; 16” long (lance). Provenance: Robert & Nina Hellman collection, Nantucket, Massachusetts.
